Stool (fecal) sample - Performed routinely to check
for Intestinal
parasites (worms).
A microscope is used to detect the parasite eggs.
These parasites are passed through the stool (feces)
of infected animals (including some wildlife). When
contaminated stool/soil is eaten, the pet is susceptible
to infection. Unless detected with a stool sample,
the infection may go unnoticed for months, causing problems
from poor weight gain,
diarrhea, to severe anemia (blood loss). See
Hookworm
infection.
Puppies and kittens are especially prone to intestinal
parasites, so stool checks on them should always be
performed.
