Feline leukemia/Feline Immunodeficiency viral (FIV-AIDS)
testing - A blood test usually done in your
veterinarian's office. Results available within
10 minutes. Some veterinarians prefer to send
this test out to a laboratory as cost is sometimes cheaper.
These viral infections in cats occur routinely, especially
in the outdoor cat. Spread by biting, mutual grooming
habits (saliva), feces, and urine, these
viruses can be deadly if undetected soon enough.
Preventative maintenance therapy is available for those
infected. If infection exists, it is recommended
that the cat stay indoors and isolated from other unaffected
cats when possible.
Dogs and humans are not affected by these cat viruses.
Vaccination is now available against Feline leukemia
virus and Feline Immunodeficiency virus infection.
