Revolution® is one of the latest to come to the veterinary
market. Revolution® comes supplied with a set
of applicator tubes each containing a single dosage
of the medication. Revolution® is marketed to
control fleas,
heartworms,
ticks,
internal
parasites,
ear mites, and sarcoptic
mange mites, in the dog and cat.
It is applied directly to the pet behind the neck between
the shoulder blades in one spot. Revolution® is
absorbed into the system within minutes of application.
Bathing of the pet can be done within 2 hours of application,
without affecting the medication's effectiveness.
Revolution® is applied on a monthly basis.
Revolution® has undergone FDA approval, and is considered
a drug, not a pesticide. Other spot on flea products
such as Frontline®
and Advantage®,
are considered pesticides, and as such are approved
through the EPA.
FDA approval requires more time and case studies for
safety, and this drug has been found extremely safe.
It is approved for cats and dogs, kittens and puppies
6 weeks of age and older.
Fleas are repelled and subsequently killed
with contact to Revolution®. Revolution® is carried
through the blood stream, and finally ends up in the
skin glands and oil layer of the skin. Here, the
flea merely has to contact the product in order to be
repelled and killed. Biting the pet does not occur,
therefore making this product a useful choice for the
pet with a flea
allergy.
Heartworm
larvae are killed by Revolution® as it circulates
through the blood stream. All stages of the heartworm
larvae are affected by the drug.
Intestinal
parasites are killed by Revolution® as it circulates
through the intestinal tract.
Ticks,
ear mites, and sarcoptic
mange mites are all killed by Revolution® upon
contact with the product in the skin oil layer and skin
glands.
Check with your veterinarian for recommendations on
what's best for your pet.
