These two drugs are the more commonly utilized steroids
in our pets. Prednisone and Prednisolone are essentially
the same medication.
Prednisolone is broken down in the liver into the active
component prednisone, which is the component that decreases
the inflammatory response. Prednisone should then
be used in place of Prednisolone in patients in which
liver function may be impaired.
Prednisone/Prednisolone, otherwise known as Pred, are
potent anti-inflammatory agents, and as a steroid, are
used in a wide variety of conditions. Allergies,
spinal inflammation, brain swelling and inflammation,
immune mediated diseases, inflammation from arthritis,
stomach and intestinal inflammation, name a few of the
many uses for
steroids (Pred).
If Pred has been chosen to treat a condition in your
pet, be sure you understand the associated side
effects which may occur with its usage. As
with all steroids given orally, Pred should be started
at an initial dosage, and then gradually tapered down
until finished.
