Pet Pharmacy:
Heartgard® (Heartworm Prevention)

Heartgard® - This product is available as a tablet or a chewable cube, given once a month for prevention of  heartworms.  Heartgard plus® is available in the chewable form only, and prevents heartworms as well as some internal parasites

Heartgard® is available for dogs as well as cats, and comes as a chewable tablet for cats.  Heartgard® has been available for years, and has been shown to be very safe. Cases currently infected with heartworms are generally placed on Heartgard® prior to and during treatment of the adult heartworms.

Some cases of a mild nausea reaction following dosage has been seen but is not common.  There have been some reports of toxic reactions to Heartgard® in the Collie and Collie/mix breed dogs.  This however, is rare and usually seen at much higher dose than Heartgard® contains.

Occasionally the dog will not eat the chewable form, and will be better with the tablet given directly or with a treat.  Cats more than occasionally refuse the Heartgard® chewable tablets, and may do better with a topically applied heartworm preventative.

Check with your veterinarian for recommendations on what's best for your pet.
