This group of prescription drugs are commonly
used in cases of uncontrollable vomiting. Available
as oral medications, or injectable, these drugs work
either on inhibiting the vomiting center in the brain
(Reglan), or directly on decreasing the acid production
in the stomach (Tagamet, Zantac, Pepcid).
Usually administered twice daily, Reglan
can be used as needed, while Tagamet is typically administered
three times a day. Zantac is designed to be given
only once daily, and Pepcid is a twice a day drug.
Pepcid AC is a recently introduced over-the-counter
medication available in 10 mg size only.
Reglan, in addition to working to inhibit the
vomiting center in the brain, also acts to promote forward
motility of the stomach and small intestines, thereby
preventing backward movement of stomach contents.
It acts to relax the muscle at the end of the stomach
into the intestines, and contracts the muscle at the
beginning of the stomach from the esophagus.
