Dog Behavior:
Submissive Urination, Uncontrollable Urination

Uncontrollable urination - otherwise known as submissive urination upon excitement, can be a common problem with certain dogs.  Some breeds such as Cocker Spaniels and Miniature Poodles seem to be prone to this trait, but it can affect any dog of any breed.

The problem is seen usually when the owner comes home and greets the dog, or another individual comes over to the dog's household.  Excitement seems overwhelming, and the dog looses control over its urination.

Punishing the dog only makes the situation worse.

Uncontrollable urination is a submissive act that the dog is displaying, and punishment only reinforces submissive behavior.  Instead, ignoring the dog, and avoiding eye contact with the dog will actually work better.  Avoid bending over the dog during this period of excitement, as this too will add to their submissive behavior.

Dogs eventually appear to "outgrow" this behavior, but it can last for up to 3 years or more.  If submissive urination continues to occur, allowing the dog to come outside to you, may be another alternative.  This way, if the urination occurs outside, it is not so difficult to deal with.

Another course of action is to "crate" the dog when you are gone from the house.  Upon returning, avoid paying attention to the crated dog for at least 5 minutes or more, until excitement has diminished.

In all cases, you are trying to avoid contact with the pet until they have become somewhat calm.
