Sarcoptic mange
is a highly contagious parasite affecting dogs
as well as humans. It too is called a "mite".
Puppies are generally affected, but adult animals exposed
to this mite will become affected too.
Animals affected are very itchy, and scratch the areas
affected severely. Usually seen on the ear flaps,
elbows, hocks (ankles), and then all over the
body.
Diagnosis is made by scraping a sample of affected
skin onto a slide, and viewing the parasite under the
microscope. This can be a difficult parasite to
diagnose this way, even though it is present on the
patient. Suspected cases should be treated anyway.
Treatment generally involves weekly dipping until all
parasites and lesions are gone. Oral medication can
also be tried. Careful handling of affected animals
by humans and washing after handling is recommended.
Humans can experience small, red, raised lesions on
the skin, especially in the areas of the bra line and
the belt line if transmission has occurred.
Contact your doctor if you suspect infection has occurred.
