Unlike the name implies, ringworm is not a worm at
all, but a fungus which infects the skin, and causes
circular patches of hair loss to occur in areas affected.
Ringworm is highly contagious and is usually carried
by cats, especially long hair cats. Diagnosis
can be made by shining a black light over an affected
area in a dark room.
A positive reaction is seen as a "bright green
glow" in affected hair shafts. A culture made from
the affected hairs, can grow this parasite, and can
be then seen by the microscope.
Treatment involves bathing in anti-fungal shampoos,
topical applications of anti-fungal creams or sprays.
Vaccination for ringworm is available, but its effectiveness
is controversial.
Careful handling and washing after handling is recommended.
Humans can experience circular, dry, sometimes scaly,
patches of affected areas anywhere on the skin where
contact has been made.
Contact your doctor if infection is suspected.
