Fleas are probably the most bothersome of all
parasites to the pet.
Not only do fleas irritate our pets through biting,
but they also can cause a flea related skin allergy,
transmit tapeworms,
and cause anemia (loss of red blood cells) which can
be life threatening.
The adult flea requires a blood meal from its host
in order to be able to breed and produce offspring.
As an adult, the flea is very susceptible to various
chemical agents (such as soaps, pesticides etc.).
However, the eggs and larva forms of the flea life
cycle, as well as the pupae (cocoon) form, are very
resistant to these agents.
Two adult fleas can produce hundreds of thousands of
offspring in their short lifetime, which make them a
very difficult parasite to control.
Fleas generally do not survive temperatures below 50
degrees Fahrenheit, but their eggs can live for many
months undisturbed.
Many products
have been developed to eliminate fleas from your pet
and its environment.
