Featherpicking in the bird can be a very serious problem.
Some birds will pick the feathers until bald, and often
times create sores or open wounds on the skin.
While many times this appears to be behavioral, medical
conditions exist in which "feather picking"
is a major symptom.
Have your bird first checked by your veterinarian if
feather picking is a problem. If medical conditions
have been completely ruled out, then the feather picking
is a behavioral problem.
Protecting the bird's body parts from the bird's beak
is often times the first line of defense. A small
collar placed about the bird's neck usually is sufficient
to keep them away from their body parts being picked.
Boredom can be a common cause for the behavioral feather
picker. Changing the scenery the bird has to view,
adding new toys to the cage, allowing the bird to have
access to the house outside the cage, and introducing
another bird, may all assist in deterring this undesirable
self mutilating behavior.
