Ear mites are another "mite" parasite which
generally resides in the ear canal of affected patients.
Usually affects cats, and cats tend to be carriers
of the infection. Dogs housed with, or in contact
with cats, can become infected. Infection does
not transmit to humans.
Diagnosis made by swabbing out the "discharge"
from the ear canal, and examining under the microscope.
Generally, this discharge is black in color.
Treatment involves medication applied topically in
the ear canal throughout the critical period of the
mite's life cycle. Oral and injectable medications
can be used, as well as topically applied Revolution®.
