These viruses in the cat cause mainly an upper respiratory
infection. Chlamydial infections tend to favor
the eyes, and can cause infections here. Calici
viral infections affect the upper respiratory tract,
and can result in ulcers forming in the mouths of affected
cats.
Affected cats can pass these viruses through infected
fluid of the upper respiratory tract through sneezing
and coughing. Eye discharge can also be a source
of spread. Humans are not affected by these viruses.
Treatment involves supportive care consisting of antibiotics
administered by mouth, applied topically to the eye(s),
or both. If the cat is not eating and is dehydrated,
replacement fluid therapy is necessary. Cats generally
recover from both viral infections.
Prevention is through vaccination
series.
